Bye Bye Telford A mixed final week-end for the AB teams. AB1 kicked off with a good draw v Shropshire 1- 4 sound draws and a win for Jonah Willow. A default on Board 1 contributed to a 4-1 loss to Midland Monarchs. John Garnett and Derek Jarvis won, but a point penalty was docked for the default. In Round 11 the team went down 4-2 to the League Leaders, West Is Best. This included 4 good draws notably Paul Madden v. Jack Rudd. AB 2 lost in Round 2.5 - 3.5 to West Is Best. Dave Flynn's win couldn't make up for the 2 top board losses.. This was followed by a loss to Sussex Martlets 2-4. In the final round against very weak opponents, our team raced to a 5-0 lead. A few hours later, the rout was complete. Our teams played in Division 3 and 4 South this year. The word is we're switching to the North. Hooray. We've been too long in the South. I'm misquoting our club's singer-song-writer. Check him out on You Tube - "Too Long In the North" Alan s Robinson. In Round 10 our captain, Neil Graham, lost to "Billy" Graham, Jr. ( O.K, I'm cheating a bit here. He's 22) |

09 March Report
The first team had a good win on Saturday, but crashed down to earth on Sunday. Our second team won both games against significantly weaker opponents. Neil won both his games. The figure after the team name is the team's average rating strength, which is normally a good guide as to how the match should go. |

07 February Report
Saturday, 13 February AB 1 v CSC Rhinos 2. Ashfield- Breadsall won 4- 2 against much weaker opponents. Wins for Peter Mercs, John Garnett and Matthew George. Draws for Andy Walker and Derek Jervis. AB 2 v Throw In The Tal Closely matched teams. Dave Flynn scored the sole win. Draws for Andrew George, Richard Truman and Neil. Losses fpr Steve and Bob. Result 2.5 - 3.5 Sunday, 14 Feb AB 1 v Wessex Historically the kingdom of Wessex was considerably more powerful than Ashfield-Breadsall, but there was nothing between them today. All 6 games were drawn including by the Breadsall Three. Perhaps the teams were too much under the influence of Valentine's Day. AB 2 v Shropshire The second team only had a county to contend with, but met their second defeat of the week-end. David Levens was our sole winner with draws for Richard Truman and Maurice Hill. Dave Flynn, Bob and Neil had losses. Result 2-4 |

05 January Report
Round 3 Saturday 16 Jan Ashfield-Breadsall 1 v Warwickshire Select 2 A bad day at the office for the senior AB team against a team only slightly stronger on paper. The loss of the top 4 boards sunk our team. The bright spots were John Garnett's win and Derek Jarvis' draw. Result 1.5 -4.5 Iceni 1 v Ashfield-Breadsall 2 A narrow defeat for our second team against possibly the strongest team in the division. Neil Graham continued his winning play in the 4 NCL, and there were also creditable draws for Bob Taylor, Richard Truman and Maurice Hill. Result 3.5 - 2.5 Round 4 Sunday 17 Jan Surbiton v AB 1 The Sunday team hit back well. Despite Paul Madden's top board loss, there were wins for Jonah Willow, Peter Mercs and John Garnett, the latter completing a week-end double. Draws for Derek and Steve sealed a comfortable win. Result 2-4 Oxford 3 v AB 2 AB2 made the most of a a significant grading advantage. Wins for Richard Truman, David Levens and Maurice Hill. Draws for Bob Taylor, David Flynn and Neil Graham. Neil was unbeaten over the week-end but his FIDE rating of 1825 will not have benefited from his draw to Aristotelis Tselos, FIDE rating 1372. I'm surmising he's an improving junior of the sort Neil hates to play. Result 1.5 - 4.5 For full results see 4NCL web-site. |
03 November Report
The first week-end of the 4 NCL took place this week-end. Two teams are playing under the Ashfield- Breadsall banner, and Neil has recruited 7 new players who played on the first week-end. Welcome to the Magnificent Seven - Matthew George, John Garnett, Richard Truman, David Flynn, Jonah Willow, David Levens and Maurice Hill. The first team play in Division 3 South, and the second team in Division 4 South. The first team had a successful week-end , winning both games. For me, it seemed strange to see Derek as the only Ashfield-Breadsall player in the senior team on the Saturday, but Neil can only pick from who is available, and I was pleased to see Paul, Derek and Steve in the Sunday team. The second team had a very similar start to last season.By trouncing a team of juniors in Round 1, they earned a tough draw and lost narrowly in Round 2 . In Division 1 Guildford lacking Nigel Short, on international duty, won both their games 8-0. Mark Hebden, the most consistent GM on the British domestic circuit, plays Board 7 for Guildford. This tells you all you need to know about the strength of their team. |
