Captain's Report

Our last season in Division 1 was 2011-12, when we scored 3 points from 14 games and finished bottom.  This time expectations were low. Our target was to improve on our last effort. On playing grades, our side was easily the weakest  in the division. Geoff, our intended top board, was graded 169, with our other regulars - Jerry, 151, Bob 147, Alan and myself both 139. In the event Geoff was only able to play 1 game for us and we needed reinforcements

Stan stepped down from the second team after the 2010-11 season. This year he came to our rescue and turned out for us in 8 games. He showed he is still able to compete and hold his own in the first division. He was very solid, and scored 50% . We competed well throughout an unusual season. University 1 folded after 1 game, which just left one relegation spot. Besides us, 2 other much stronger teams, West Notts 1 and Grantham 2 also struggled for points.

We were able to strengthen our team for the key games with our relegation rivals. Glenn played in 3 of these games, and we shared the points against them. Crucially we also scored two draws against our first team, in which both sides fielded depleted teams and relied on reserves.

I'd like to thank the 12 players who turned out for our team, including Ray and Neil who each volunteered for a Grantham away fixture. Our regular troops were very reliable with Jerry, Bob and Alan each playing 11 games. I can claim the distinction of being the only player  to play 13 League games for the same side in Division 1 this season. We didn't default a single board in 2015-16 . Ultimately this tipped the balance between ourselves,West Notts and Grantham. Team effort kept us up. I'm reminded of my old school motto, "Possum Si Volo."     Phil Morgan
