24/11/2015 Gambit 1 v Ashfield 2

What a poxy lot!
We played up to our best against one of the county's top teams. This was a tight contest, not reflected in the score-line. Alan played well before giving best to Mike Barnes. Mark Cooke had just too much nous for me. Substitute Stan was Mr Dependable. He had the better of his draw against Brian Hayward. On the top boards Jerry and Bob had winning chances against Pete Mercs and John Swain. With the clock a factor, each Gambit player turned the tables. Jerry will be sent to the Neil Graham correctional school to instruct him not to record in his last 5 minutes.   Bob refused a late draw offer and elected to join him in going down in flames.  Result 4.5- 0.5
The margin between winning and losing in chess, as other sports, can be very slim. In the clinch, the stronger players can show more composure, and calculating ability to dig themselves out of a hole. They create their own luck.Gambit may have seemed "poxy", but their resourcefulness was abetted by our clock-handling..
