Pre-Season Friendly

posted Sep 1, 2016, 3:37 AM by Phil Morgan
31.8.16  An Ashfield team travelled to Bateman's Mill Hotel on the pleasant outskirts of Clay Cross to play a pre-season friendly match. The teams were captained by teaching colleagues from over 35 years ago. Each team fielded a Londoner in their ranks. Ashfield edged the match, thanks to wins by Trevor Lewis and George Heath, playing near to his home stamping-ground.

Janos Wagenbach guested for Ashfield, his former club. His draw against Brian Lever, the Clay Cross captain, clinched the team win. Brian for his part was happy to get the opportunity to play the King's Gambit against our guest celebrity, who is credited for his theoretical innovations in this line.

If you've not visited this venue, a converted working mill built in 1831, it's worth a visit, with a good selection of real ales, including from local breweries.

Result Clay Cross 2 - Ashfield 3

Our League season kicks off on Wednesday 14th September with the Ashfield 2 and Ashfield 1 contest.
