Ashfield Chess Club

4th Team Review 2015 – 2016

A good season finishing 3rd in Div 5 of Notts League and thus gaining promotion to Division 4. All regular players gained a score of at least 50%.

Midway through the season the division had essentially turned into a 3 horse race of Newark 3, Nomads 3 and Ashfield 4. With only 3 games to go these 3 teams all had to play each other to determine the final league standing. We lost against both Newark and Nomads and with Nomads losing to Newark then Newark became Div 5 Champions.

My thanks to the 5 regular players in the team and to Stan and Trevor who ensured that we did not default a single board.

Here's a brief report on the 3rd Team performance:-

For most of the season Ashfield 3 looked like serious contenders for the runner-up promotion spot, but University 1 came through strongly in the second half and displaced us. We scored well on 4 boards, with Nigel, Steve, Stan and even the captain getting well above 50%. Stan, once again, was highly consistent on Bd 3 with 9 points from 13 games and Steve Bak scored 81/2 from 12. Malc was too busy selling chocolates to play during the Christmas and Easter periods, so we lacked a settled final board, with Pete Clarke standing in most often. John Shaw made a valuable contribution on 2 occasions at the end of the season.

My thanks to everyone who turned out. I hope we can retain the same basic team come September"

Return To Planet Earth

A2's journey to and from Division 1 took twice our usual time. The demise of University 1 in 2015 held up our return. This season we were reduced to 3 Full-Timers - Phil,Jerry and Alan.. Two players, Nigel and Glenn  played 15 games between them and another 15 games were covered by 5 players - John S, Stan, Bob, and the 2 Steves..

We caught a few teams by surprise in the first half of the season, amassing 5 points from 7 games, inducing mild panic among rivals, including our first team. From January we could only add 1 point to this, experiencing three 3-2  losses. Morale of the men stayed good, and we fought hard to the end.

Board Scores

Board 1    21%     Board 2   36%     Board 3     21%       Board 4    21%      Board 5   65%

Of the regulars, most of us scored at about 30%. Stars were Nigel - 4.5/8 on his first season in Division 1, Glenn  3/7 mostly on top board, and Stan 2.5/3 which works out at 83%.

Future Plans

Rest and recuperation are the order of the day. We'll gird our loins for September's return to our home planet. We'll face less travel. I'll check my charts, but we may not need to cross the River Trent.

We'll aim to stabilise our ship, to improve our scores on Boards 1, 2 and 4,  and to avoid slipping into the free fall that teams like Central and Long Eaton experienced on their re-entry to Division 2.

Many Thanks to all  who served in our challenging Division 1 campaigns, 2015-16 and 2016-17 We have competed against very strong players and teams to the best of our ability, showing skills and spirit. Mission Accomplished.

Ashfield 1 – Season 2016/17 Report

After somewhat of a disastrous start, losing to the second team, things didn’t improve much in 2016. Finding ourselves in a five way relegation battle with our second team, Grantham 2, Gambit 2, and West Bridgford, we managed wins against the first two in the New Year. Then, thanks to Neil, we recruited Louis and beat the other two. This seemingly put us safe, but thanks to an administrative error by me, we were plunged into a sea of disputes and potential lost points.

Going into the last game of the season at Champions elect Grantham 1 (who had won all their matches, and had beaten us 5-0 in the home game) these were still rumbling on and we needed to pick up at least one draw to be sure to avoid relegation on these technicalities. It was a tense match but in the end Louis and I both managed to secure draws (both coming close to wins as it happened) and, although Grantham completed their clean sweep of the League, we are safely ensconced in Division 1 for next season.

The following table shows the individual performances this season.

Grantham 1 v Ash 1   12.04.17

The curtain came down on our season with an exciting last match tonight.

C Dorrington    1/2 – 1/2    B Dong
P Cumbers       1/2 – 1/2    S Burke
N Birtwistle         1 – 0       D Jarvis
S Prior                  1 – 0       A Toothill
S Williams           1 – 0       P Morgan

Congratulations to Grantham 1 on a clean sweep, though it looked like we might just spoil the party for a while. Although Derek looked under pressure after the first hour or so, Phil had a wild game, Andrew looked better and Louie was close to winning.

Not many teams have held Grantham 1 on the top 2 boards.!

Ash 2 v Grantham 2

posted Apr 6, 2017, 8:58 AM by Phil Morgan

Ash 2 - Grantham 2    5.3.17

We bowed out of Division 1 with our first point since December, also earned against Grantham 2. That had been a very good point against a full-strength line -up. This was at best an o.k. result against depleted opponents. We were equally matched on the top 3 boards, which ended in 3 draws for Glenn, Jerry and myself. There was more disparity in the grades on Boards 4 and 5 and the results went with grading strength. Nigel Wright beat Chris Cumbers in a close , interesting game. He beat off his opponent's attack and steered into a winning ending.Chris Hill secured the visitors' draw , check-mating Alan Robinson with all of 6 seconds to spare.

Result  A2 v Grantham 2        2.5 -  2.5

Nomads 1 v Ash 3

Nomads 1 v A3     3.4.17

The League situation inspired our team to push for a win. A loss for Pete Clarke made this a tall order. Steve Bak overpressed in trying to force a win and lost. Trevor won, and Nigel scored a good draw against John Harrison. Stan was pressing for a win, but falling behind on the clock. Stan's opponent , Graham Neil, offered a draw which Stan failed to hear, after which Stan's flag fell. Graham then very sportingly agreed the draw in this unclear situation. Our team just miss out on promotion, but have had a very good season in Division 3.

Result  Nomads - A3      3-2  Congratulations to Nomads on their return to D2 next season.
