Ashfield 2 v Gambit 2   9.11.16

Waking up to the news that Donald Trump had been elected U.S. President, with the world feeling a less safe place,  playing Chess offered a sanctuary, and our team found the solace we were seeking.

Steve Bak, a late call-up, gave us the lead with a dominant win against John Tassi. Alan Robinson doubled this defeating Gambit captain, Drag Sudar. Gambit struck back through Graeme Jennings. He played into my trappy opening, but navigated its difficulties much more accurately than I did. Glenn Halfpenny's draw assured our team of at least a point, with Jerry Herrington's top board match still in play. This was a see-saw encounter, which could have gone either way. Jerry played well to contain his opponent's advancing central pawns, and to retain enough time to force his board win and  a decisive team victory.

Result  Ash 2 v Gambit 2       3.5- 1.5 ( Our second win in 5 games  matches our tally of wins for the whole of the 2015-16 League season.)
