Ashfield 2 v Nomads 1  22.11.17

J Herrington 0  1  D Flynn
D Levens     0   1  S Bhayat
R Taylor      .5  .5  M Hill
P Morgan     1   0  D Griffiths
A Robinson   1   0 G Neil                  Result 2.5 - 2.5

We were handsomely defeated on the top boards by the visitors in-form top board pair. I struck back and there was an orthodox draw between  4 NCL teammates on Board 3. We needed a win from Alan to salvage a draw. A blocked position with neither King castled looked drawish, but Graham was a move or two short from completing his development. Alan further restricted the scope of his opponent's pieces, and contrived to double his Rooks on a half-open file. He won a pawn and achieved domination of the position with Graham's Bishop effectively reduced to a pawn  on the back rank.

The match wasn't of the highest quality with Boards 1,2 and 4 decided by simple errors. It is more likely to be remembered for the splendid dress clash on Board 2. Even in late November, Shane's colourful Hawaiian shirt was much better suited to the tropical heat of our club-room than David's Christmas jumper. This had to come off. Shane won the dress battle on top of their game.
