Newark 2 v Ashfield 2       8.1.18

An eventful night on and off the board. Our team car found the A617 blocked due to an accident. Neil niftily turned round and found an alternative route. Nigel, travelling from the South was delayed by 2 road accidents on the motorway. The venue, Newark Railway Sports and Social Club, is on the outskirts of town and seems on the edge of civilisation. A relic of Newark's industrial past, it felt like stepping back into a working man's club of 50 years ago.

Newark 2 have underperformed this season but deservedly won on the night.

1 I Burridge - D. Levens  draw
2 D Jazdzewski - N Graham  draw
3 G Ladds -  P Morgan    1-0
4 K Aiton  - A Robinson   1-0
5 G Bosworth - N Wright  draw           Result 3.5 - 1.5

There were good draws by our new top board pairing, and Nigel comfortably held his game. Alan, who has been our most successful player this season, lost out in an exciting game. He and his opponent appeared to have menacing attacks. Keith's got in first. My opponent missed an earlier winning chance before in touching distance of a draw, (0.00 engine evaluation), I chose  first to give him a pawn before inexplicably placing my Queen en prise.

This result dents our promotion chances, and now throws open the race for the runners-up spot in Division 2
